Use LexisNexis® Semantic Search powered by PureDiscovery

… With lexis.com Patent Sources—Even Selected News Sources

At lexis.com, Semantic Search* is available for all patent sources, Elsevier journals, research disclosure full-text, IP.com and select news sources like The New York Times.

When you select a source or a combination of sources that offer Semantic Search, you’ll notice the Semantic Search link next to the standard lexis.com search form.

  • Click Semantic Search.
  • Enter at least three search words, e.g., ENTER: mechanical heart valve
Select a segment and/or date restriction if you wish.
Note: Do not use Boolean connectors. Enter the terms as words, sentences or paragraphs. For best results, enter homogenous terms that relate to one concept.
  • Click Analyze Search Input to review and modify the semantic analysis before running your search. (To run the search without reviewing and adjusting the search, click Search Now.)

Concepts based on the terms you entered appear in a “QueryCloud” (shown below on the right) in order of the relative importance to be applied in your search query. Font size and color indicate the importance of each word or phrase. In addition, all terms are listed with their relative weightings below the diagram.

On the “Query Cloud” screen you can:

  • Adjust the Relative Importance of Concepts
Click a concept. Choose a setting in the displayed box. Then click Apply.
  • Delete a concept
Click a concept, then click Delete Concept. (Or—here’s a quick way to delete— uncheck the box next to any concept you wish to remove.)
  • Add your own search concepts (up to 20 concepts total)
Enter your terms in the Add another concept field. Click Add. (Scroll to the bottom of the concept list and select the new item to change the added concept’s importance.)

To rearrange the concepts in order of importance after changing settings, click Update Display. Once you’re satisfied with your search concepts, click the Search Now button.

*Semantic Search may not be available to all government subscribers.

… With LexisNexis PatentOptimizer™

You can use Semantic Search whether you’re drafting a patent application or analyzing an online patent retrieved at lexis.com. After you check the document’s claims and are viewing the related Claim Tree Hierarchy, you can:

  • Select your first claim of interest and click Search Claims.
The Search Claims pane displays, and the elements of the claim are extracted into the Search Definition dialog. You can drag and drop additional claims or elements and eliminate common words that might cause imprecise results (click Filter Common).
  • To select Semantic Search analysis, click Apply Semantic Analysis. Concepts will appear in the field to the right of the Claim Elements field in order of the relative importance to be applied in your search query. Relative weight is indicated by the three columns appearing to the right of the term.
  • Now you’re ready to adjust the semantic analysis. You can:
Deselect terms: To select or deselect an individual semantic search element, click the check box next to it. (Deselecting will give the term a weight of “0.”) To deselect all elements listed, click Deselect All. To remove deselected elements, click the Remove Unselected button.
  • Add terms (from the Claim Elements field): Highlight a term and click >>. You can have a total of 20 elements.
  • Required terms: To require a particular element appear in your search results, click the space next to the element under the Incl column.
  • Excluded terms: To exclude a particular element from your search results, click the space next to the element under the Excl column.
  • Change Weighting: To change a term’s weight, click the number to the right of the element and enter a new number.

To sort the semantic analysis elements once you’ve made adjustments, just click the column heading. To move between various iterations of your Semantic Search analysis, click Back, Refresh and Forward (green arrows).

… With LexisNexis TotalPatent™ Research Services

The Semantic Search steps are basically the same as in lexis.com patent sources—entering at least three terms, viewing and adjusting terms in the generated QueryCloud, etc. The only difference is that you’ll find the Semantic Search option in its own search tab, i.e., to use Semantic Search in TotalPatent, select the Semantic Search tab.
