Chinese Legal, News & Business Sources—and More—Available Now at lexis.com®
By Rachel Baarz

Ask any legal information professional where to go for information on compliance and practice of:

  • U.S. tax laws;
  • the information and telecommunications industry and laws that support them;
  • real property laws; or
  • U.S. labor & employment law.

You’re likely to get a list of sources longer than your arm!

But research really starts to get complicated, though, when that same information is requested for other countries. International legal research is becoming a common part of the job for many legal information professionals in U.S.-based offices, specifically, research on Chinese laws and business practices.

This doesn’t come as a surprise, considering that in recent years Chinese economic and manufacturing growth has prompted many U.S. businesses to expand into China. And many Chinese-based businesses are expanding their services into the United States. Chances are your law firm is doing business with a client who has Chinese business interests or is considering future expansion into China.

LexisNexis offers an unbeatable collection of information from this rapidly growing economic powerhouse, including the:

  • LexisNexis China Law Database;
  • Martindale-Hubbell® China Law Digest;
  • Chinese legal and trade journals; and
  • Chinese news and business coverage.

Plus a group of new Chinese legal publications recently released at lexis.com offer business investors—and the law firms that support them—a thorough, but easy-to-read and understand analysis of many important areas of economic growth in China:

  • 2008 Latest PRC Tax Compliance—Laws, Regulations & Commentaries
  • 3G China: Legal Environment & Risk Control in Information Industry
  • Invest in China: A Practical Legal Guide to PRC Real Estate Investment
  • Case Analysis on Latest PRC Labor Contract Law

These new titles provide more in-depth legal analysis to complement the Chinese law materials available through the LexisNexis China Law Database. The LexisNexis China Law Database is an authoritative collection of Chinese laws, regulations, tax information, judicial decisions and other legal documents, collected from government sources, and translated into English by LexisNexis China Online in Beijing.

With the collapse of Western credit markets, China has also become a primary source for corporate finance. And at lexis.com, for example, you can gain access to explanations of relevant laws and regulations in China. These laws have been translated to English and have been written by local experts with a strong understanding of both legal and cultural implications.

For an authoritative analysis of important Chinese cases, codes, statutes, rulings, emerging issues or legal topics, turn to LexisNexis Emerging Issues Analyses. These commentaries, such as China’s Value-Added Tax Reform Factors Not to Be lgnored (2009 Emerging Issues 4081)*, are more current and concentrated than treatises and more analytical than news. Emerging Issues Analyses bridge the information gap between the two, providing quick expert analysis of current developments in Chinese law.

Because LexisNexis customers asked for information on Chinese companies as their organizations expand into this area or work with new Asian suppliers, lexis.com offers the Mergent Private Chinese Companies database of Chinese privately and state-owned companies via subscription. This source provides unparalleled coverage of more than 270,000 companies. You’ll find:

  • Comprehensive company data and business descriptions
  • Executives and key contacts
  • Small, medium and large private companies
  • Financial data on private companies
  • Production data
  • Financial statements and more.

The database is compiled using data feeds from the National Bureau of Statistics of China and the State Administration for Industry in Commerce. These feeds are further reviewed and enhanced by content specialists to ensure the data is accurate and complete. In addition, incremental updates are performed on a regular basis to capture changes in executives, ownership or addresses.

LexisNexis news and business coverage of China is particularly strong, and it includes The China Business Review and the South China Morning Post, blogs such as This is China! and Talent in China for alternative voices, and breaking news sources like China Energy Newswire.
