Semantic Search on LexisNexis® TotalPatent™ (August 2009)

Semantic search is an intelligent searching option that combines a patent searcher’s expertise with cutting-edge semantic technology. The exciting new search feature is available on TotalPatent™ and available through lexis.com® for IP related sources (including Elsevier Journals and select news sources), and PatentOptimizer.

Semantic search is not intended to replace a Boolean query. It enhances that query by making intelligent connections, in the context of the search, to return additional related results for the searcher’s consideration. This is especially helpful when terminology in a patent is vague or obscure. In such an instance, the words used in a patent claim may be so vague that a precise Boolean query would not return an important patent document.

The option to search with semantic is available in 3 of our solutions:

  • On TotalPatent™ as a search tab at the top
  • On PatentOptimizer™ as a button on the top right of the claims screen
  • On lexis.com® as a tab on the left of the search box (only when a searcher selects specific content). Content on lexis.com that will have the semantic search option available includes:
    • Patent files
    • IP.com
    • Research Disclosure
    • Elsevier Journals
    • The New York Times
    • Computer & Communication stories from Newsweek, US News & World Reports, and more
    • Wall Street & Technology
    • A total of over 2,700 sources
