Stay Smart on Dynamic Economic Issues: Use LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology™
By Leanne Battle

Clearly the trouble with tracking issues related to the current global economic situation is not a lack of information. There is information everywhere! The problem is finding just the information that you need at the time you need it. LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology is designed to address just this issue, and LexisNexis has created some specific indexing terms to help you.

For example, check out the Financial Crisis Center on Lexis® Transactional Advisor at lexis.com. That’s the easiest way to track news on credit regulation and bailout plans. The Current News & Legislation section includes links to special Mega News files, i.e., LexisNexis SmartIndexing terms have already been applied to narrow your results automatically. No need to add special terms to your search. Select MegaNews – Financial Crisis, MegaNews – Credit Regulation, etc. Then add a company or person name, etc.

(The Financial Crisis Center also offers the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (aka the “Bailout Bill”), and watch for the link to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (111 HR 1 aka the “Stimulus Package”).

But you can also create your own tailored results with any English (U.S. & UK), French and German news sources at lexis.com, as well as with U.S. federal and state legislative materials, company profiles and SEC filings.

Here are some LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology terms to get you started—complete with details on what each term targets:

  • Bailouts: targets financial relief packages for companies, industries or countries.
  • Bank Failures: targets the inability of a bank or other depository institution to meet its credit obligations. The scope includes measures designed to prevent bank failures or mitigate their impact.
  • Financial Guarantee Insurance: targets insurance policies and providers that cover financial losses due to nonpayment of debts. The scope includes mortgage guaranty insurance, bond insurance and credit insurance.
  • Financial Ratings: targets financial performance ratings of bonds, securities, debt and related instruments by major ratings firms such as Standard and Poor’s® or Moody’s.
  • Financial Results: targets periodic reports of earnings, sales, profits and losses of companies and financial markets.
  • Financial Risk Management: targets the handling of financial risk by companies and organizations. The scope includes providers of financial risk management services.
  • Mortgage Baking & Finance: targets the market in real property mortgage lending. The scope includes wholesalers, retailers, originators and those who service the industry.

Search with these terms and other search words; even add other LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology terms for people, geographic locations and other subjects. Just use the TERMS segment, e.g.:

SOURCE: Mega News, Most Recent 90 Days
SEARCH: TERMS (credit crisis AND bank failures AND dubai)

Also use LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology terms to track bills and public laws, current and historical, on a specific topic. For example, you need to know every time a bill that could affect the energy industry is introduced. (Go to the lexis.com Legal tab. Select Legislation & Politics – U.S. & U.K. > Bill Tracking and Full Text Bills, Current Congress. ENTER: TERMS(energy regulation).

Or, perhaps you don’t need every bill, only legislation that represents a substantial impact on the transportation sector. ENTER: TERMS(transportation industry law #90plus#). (This applies a 90 percent or greater relevance score to your search, helping you to filter out the “noise” results.) Save your search as a LexisNexis Alert to be informed when a relevant bill is loaded.

We are all doing more global business than ever before. Perhaps you need to know more about economic conditions outside of the United States. Use a combination of LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology terms to focus on economic issues in a specific country or region, e.g., economic recovery indicators in China. ENTER: COUNTRY(china #80plus#) AND TERMS(economic recovery #90plus#)
