5. Multi-Language Indexing

French & German Indexing

The power and precision offered by LexisNexis SmartIndexing is also available in French and German.

How are French and German SmartIndexing terms created?
Each index term is individually hand-crafted to its target language. Native-speaking indexers create and test rules using the exact same tools and processes employed for English SmartIndexing.  No automated translation is involved, thus ensuring against degradation of results.

When should French and German SmartIndexing be used?
Just like English SmartIndexing, multi-language SmartIndexing adds value to any search run against German- or French-language news & business content.  Some of the top reasons for using multi-language SmartIndexing include:

  • Search German- or French-language sources with the same confidence you search English-language sources using SmartIndexing.
  • Retrieve relevant articles in German or French, even if you don't know the language.
  • Find breaking news or trends about the European market before they hit the English-language press.
  • Compare US and European coverage of the same news using parallel SmartIndexing topics across languages.
  • Research industries.  It's very difficult to build a keyword search that captures an entire industry - especially in a different business culture.  Take advantage of the Industry SmartIndexing terms developed by native speakers for each language market.

What topics are covered in French & German indexing?
French and German SmartIndexing consists of thousands of index terms covering a wide range of topics and places, just like English SmartIndexing.  New terms are added regularly, so check back for the latest updates.

Can I search companies and people in French and German?
Yes.  While company and people index terms display in English, the underlying rules include French and German variants.

Searching with French & German SmartIndexing

In Nexis, build your search using the Index Term Lookup Tool, but select a French or German source.  The Nexis system automatically searches a language-indepdendent code, returning relevant documents no matter whether the source is English (US or UK), French or German.
