Tracking Down Information on Nonprofit Organizations Can be a Challenge (July 1, 2009)

Finding detailed information related to nonprofit associations can sometimes be challenging. However, using the Encyclopedia of Associations on lexis.com® makes finding nonprofit information fast, easy and cost-effective. Encyclopedia of Associations is included in most lexis.com online subscription plans.

ORGANIZATION TYPE: Use the INDUSTRY-TYPE segment to find information about nonprofit associations.

For example, to find social welfare organizations in Ohio:

  • Click the Search tab.
  • Click the Legal source tab.
  • Click the following links in the order listed to search Encyclopedia of Associations®: Reference / Directories / Encyclopedia of Associations.
  • Make sure the radio button in front of ‘Terms and Connectors’ is selected.
  • Enter industry-type (social welfare) and state (ohio) in the search field.
  • Click Search.

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: Use the DESCRIPTION segment to find information on particular kinds of nonprofit associations.

For example, take the following steps to find nonprofit life insurance organizations that have a budget greater than $500,000:

  • Click the Search tab.
  • Click the Legal source tab.
  • Click the following links in the order listed to search Encyclopedia of Associations®:: Reference / Directories / Encyclopedia of Associations.
  • Make sure the radio button in front of ‘Terms and Connectors’ is selected.
  • Type: description (life insurance) and revenues > 500,000 in the search field.
    NOTE: The REVENUES segment denotes the dollar amount for the organization's budget.
  • Click Search.

ORGANIZATION BUDGET: Use the KEY-FINANCIALS segment to find the annual budget amounts for nonprofit organizations.

For example, take the following steps to find the budget amount for American Red Cross organizations:

  • Click the Search tab.
  • Click the Legal source tab.
  • Click the following links in the order listed to search Encyclopedia of Associations®: Reference / Directories / Encyclopedia of Association.
  • Make sure the radio button in front of ‘Terms and Connectors’ is selected
  • Type: key-financials (budget) and organization (american red cross) in the search field.
  • Click Search.
