Common Search Terms (February 25, 2009)

When searching at lexis.com®, certain word equivalents and abbreviations are automatically searched so you do not have to include all the variations in your search string.

Common search terms and their equivalents include:

  • First, second, third, etc. searches also for the equivalents 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.
  • For all days of the week except for Sunday, you can search using either Mon, Tues, Wed, etc,. or Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc.
  • One through twenty can also be searched using the numerals 1 – 20
  • The word “and” is equivalent to the ampersand sign “&”

There are even common equivalents for News and Financial source material searching:

  • Company is equivalent to co
  • Corporation is equivalent to corp
  • Incorporated is equivalent to inc

The LexisNexis® services do no interpret upper and lower case characters differently, so in most cases you also do not need to worry about capitalization!
