Find A Source Precise Results (February 4, 2009)

The Find A Source tab, on the LexisNexis services, was enhanced last year to improve the results when searching for a source. Now when you enter the name of a source, the search occurs in both the title segment of sources, and in the source information description. In effect, a broader search is occurring, with implicit “or” connectors. While this improves the likelihood of finding a source, there are times when you know the exact title, and want that, and only that, in the results.

If you find yourself in this situation, Senior Librarian Relations Consultant, Bridget MacMillan suggests putting your search terms in quotation marks. The quotation marks makes the search literal, and the result set is much smaller and more precise. For example, the search plain dealer will retrieve 142 source listings in the Find A Source tab. In contrast, once the quotation marks are added, the search “plain dealer” retrieves 10 source listings— a much more precise result set. Keep this tip in mind the next time you need to find a specific source.
