Practice Area Statistical Files (April 16, 2008)
Gayle Lynn-Nelson, Senior Librarian Relations Consultant shares this tip.
Have you ever been asked to find statistics that impact cases, clients, or business?
Gayle recommends the Practice Area Statistical Files. These files contain a variety of statistical tables gathered from organizations such as governmental agencies, bureaus and private organizations. Contributors include the Bureau of the Census, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Federal Highway Administration, and the National Science Foundation. The Practice Area Statistical Files provide highly relevant and on-point statistics that serve multiple practice area and litigation needs. Statistics help attorneys support their arguments in court, lobby for changes to legislation, and bring to life elements of a case.
For example, you need to search for Case Assessment Statistics that will help determine the best venue or forum for a case. You select this source: Legal > Area of Law - By Topic > Immigration > Search Immigration Statistics > Population Statistics. Your search to target the age group of a population is: (aged or aging) /3 population and issue-date>2005.
The results provide detailed information on populations. This information can help the team create a composite of potential jurors. You look like a star for quickly and easily supplying this data!
