Selecting Multiple Jurisdictions in Lexis Advance® (March 18, 2013)
By Michael Saint-Onge

Do you want to search both selected Federal and State Courts at the same time? Now, on Lexis Advance®, you can combine multiple jurisdictions in one search, and even save it as a favorite filter for future searches.

Here’s how to do it: Run a search in all jurisdictions (there is no charge for searching in Lexis Advance if you have an underlying contract). Once you’ve retrieved results, click on the “select multiple” under the Courts filtering tool on the left-hand side. Simply expand the circuit (for example, if you want to combine California Federal and State courts, expand the Ninth Circuit and choose all the California Federal Courts. Then move over to the State Courts and expand California to see the courts available.) Once you’ve combined the courts you want, click ok. Your results will now be filtered accordingly. Just under the heading “You’ve selected…” on the left side, there’s a link to save as a favorite. Click that link, name the filter (e.g., California Federal and State Courts) and then click OK. This will save as a favorite available from the initial search box on Lexis Advance. To keep it in the list permanently, click the star until it becomes solid. Voila!
