Karma1118 3/17/2008 11:46:56 AM | Original Post - What is the appropriate response when a job offer is made that is much lower than I had anticipated? I don't want to insult the firm, but I also don't want to undervalue myself. "You can't be serious" doesn't seem to be appropriate... |
Razzungil 4/21/2008 12:15:41 PM | The type of response depends to some extent on the place that offered the job and the position that is being discussed. Be sure that you have done your research first so that you have a clear idea of what the market in your area pays for similar jobs.
An appropriate response might be:
"Perhaps, I misunderstood the position you are offering. It is my understanding that my duties will include (fill in the blank) and that firms such as yours pay a much higher amount for people with that level of responsibility, with my education and experience." |
JRosenspan 5/13/2008 10:48:18 AM | That (above) was a great response. Research is always key. I would just add that some firms, by policy, see the offer as the start of a negotiation. I received a low offer at a previous job and was pleasantly surprised by a quick $10K increase when I said, "Gosh, that was a lot less than I was expecting". I guess they knew I was ready to walk and they wanted to keep me. |
