Mino Auletta Elected President of Court of Arbitration for Sport, Defeating Former World Anti-Doping Chief Dick Pound
MONACO – On the occasion of its 27th Meeting, held in Monaco, the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) elected Mr Mino Auletta (Italy) as President of ICAS/CAS. Mr Auletta performed the function of President ad interim of ICAS/CAS as from January 2007, further to the death of Judge Kéba Mbaye, President and founder of ICAS/CAS. Mr Mino Auletta is Attorney-at-law at the Milan High Court and at the Court of Appeal. He is also legal counsel of the International Athletic Foundation in Monaco and was member of the legal commission of the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
The other candidates for the position included Robert Briner of Switzerland, Gunnar Werner of Sweden, and Canadian Dick Pound, former president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Pound is known for making controversial remarks about doping in sports, and the International Cycling Union (UCI) filed a complaint in a Swiss court in March for comments critical of UCI’s efforts to eliminate the use of performance-enhancing drugs in cycling. Calling the allegations “unfounded,” WADA stated that it would robustly defend Pound.
