About the Authors Clifford J. Shapiropartner, Barnes & Thornburg LLP
Clifford J. Shapiro is a partner in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP and Chairperson of the Construction Law Practice Group. He concentrates his practice in construction law and litigation, insurance coverage litigation on behalf of policyholders and other complex commercial litigation.
Mr. Shapiro is ranked among the top construction attorneys in Chambers & Partners' Chambers USA 2008 directory. He is also listed in The Best Lawyers In America® in the Construction area, Who’s Who Legal Illinois, Leading Lawyers and Illinois Super Lawyers in the area of construction law/litigation.
Mr. Shapiro represents owners, contractors and subcontractors in a wide variety of construction related matters. He has worked on cases involving office buildings, retail structures, university housing, parking structures, warehouses, residential conversion projects and new residential developments. Mr. Shapiro negotiates and drafts construction contracts and other construction project documents. He also handles disputed claims (including construction defect, delay, indoor air quality/mold claims) in mediation, arbitration and litigation proceedings. In addition, Mr. Shapiro often negotiates and, when necessary, litigates insurance coverage claims on behalf of construction industry and other policyholder clients.
Mr. Shapiro speaks regularly throughout the United States about construction litigation and insurance coverage issues, and he is the author of several publications. He is an active member of the ABA’s Forum on the Construction Industry (where he serves as a member of the Division 7 Steering Committee regarding surety and insurance issues), the ABA’s Construction Litigation Committee (where he serves as co-chair of the Insurance Subcommittee), the ABA’s Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee (where he regularly presents programs related to construction and insurance coverage issues) and the Society of Illinois Construction Attorneys (where he is a member of the Steering Committee).
Mr. Shapiro received his B.A. magna cum laude from Washington University and his J.D. with high honors from George Washington University Law School, where he was a member of the law review and awarded Order of the Coif. Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, he was a partner and chair of the Construction Law Group at the Chicago law firm of Sachnoff & Weaver.
