Douglas Spelfogel Joins Foley & Lardner’s N.Y. Bankruptcy Practice
NEW YORK – Sep. 30 - Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that Douglas Spelfogel has joined the firm as a partner and head of its Bankruptcy & Business Reorganizations Practice in the New York office.
Spelfogel focuses his practice on representation of creditors, creditors' committees, venture funds, lenders, landlords, and trustees, as well as debtors in complex financial restructurings, asset sales, workouts, and business reorganizations both out-of-court and through Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code. He has appeared as counsel in more than two dozen reported decisions, while also counseling various parties in national liquidations and reorganizations, including Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, General Growth Properties, Williams Communications, Enron, Inc., Herman's Sporting Goods, Inc., and Sesame Street Retail Stores, Inc. Spelfogel has also represented Fortune 100 companies in handling various bankruptcy proceedings and bankruptcy-related litigation.
Prior to joining Foley, Spelfogel was a partner with Baker & Hostetler LLP and head of its bankruptcy and creditors' rights practice in New York. Earlier in his career, Spelfogel was appointed a senior trial attorney with the Department of Justice's U.S. Trustee Program, where he oversaw many of the largest Chapter 11 cases in New York.
Bankruptcy Insider has recognized Spelfogel as one of the top 10 unsecured creditor attorneys in the country. He recently served as a panelist for the American Bankruptcy Institute's 2009 Northeast Conference Fraud Panel while also co-authoring the conference's fraud publication.
Spelfogel joins the New York office following the recent additions of intellectual property attorney Jonathan Moskin; health care attorney Jeffrey Thrope; intellectual property attorney Etsuo Doi (New York and Tokyo); Barry Mandel, former co-head of Global Litigation, Employment and Regulatory Affairs for Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc.; and energy and infrastructure attorneys Howard Margulis and Ellen Wolchek.
