Global Warming Threat Extends To Sports, Suds

Joe (and Jane) Sixpacks of the world beware:  Climate change may be hazardous to your hunting, your fishing and your beer drinking.

The news this week was full of predictions of widespread flooding, droughts, malaria outbreaks and malnutrition related to global warming, dire scenarios the average citizen might have trouble imagining.  But two reports surfaced to strike fear in the hearts of sporting folk.

Representatives of nine major hunting and fishing organizations said they planned to meet with U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., to air their concerns about threats to fish and wildlife habit from climate change, The Associated Press reported.  Dingell, the leader of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has promised action on climate change.

A report compiled by the Wildlife Management Institute said that rising temperatures could affect a wide variety of fish and wildlife, including trout, salmon and other game fish, ducks, geese, antelope, elk, mule deer and quail.

Hunting, fishing and drinking beer often go hand-in-hand, and a climate scientist warned that climate change could hurt the production of malting barley, causing brew prices to rise.

Jim Salinger of New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research said rising temperatures could cause a decrease in the key beer ingredient in parts of New Zealand and Australia, and similar effects could be expected worldwide, AP reported, adding that one brewer said the price of malted barley, sugar and aluminum have already gone up because of global warming.
