Howard J. Stevens has more than 25 years of experience in workers' compensation defense. His expertise has been called upon by various news media for his commentary regarding workers' comp issues, and he has served as Judge Pro Tem at the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board. He is a Certified Specialist in Workers' Compensation with the State Bar of California's Board of Legal Specialization.
Mr. Stevens attended undergraduate school at UC-Berkeley and UCLA, and earned his J.D. with honors from
Western State College of Law. His legal practice initially focused on workers’ compensation, and he had his own workers’ comp defense firm in
Santa Ana for several years.
Prior to joining McDermott & Clawson in early 1998, Mr. Stevens worked as an instructor for the Insurance Educational Association for seven years, teaching basic and advanced claims handling, subrogation, and labor code and case law.
He has authored articles for Risk Management Magazine, the San Francisco Recorder, and Los Angeles Lawyer. In addition, Mr. Stevens worked for several years with an anti-fraud task force, assisting the Los Angeles District Attorneys’ office and two major
California insurance carriers in the investigation and prosecution of workers’ comp fraud.
Mr. Stevens is an active member of the State Bar of California.
