More than forty LexisNexis authors and contributors from across the globe were featured speakers in over fifty sessions at the 2009 International Bar Association (IBA) Annual Conference held in Madrid, Spain October 4–9. The conference attracted a record-breaking attendance with close to 5,000 delegates from 120 countries.
The authors’ participation in the conference was acknowledged with special signage at the LexisNexis booth to highlight their publications and speaking roles, a “meet the authors” schedule, book signing, and a reception during the exhibit. Over thirty authors attended the reception and were thrilled to see their name in lights, with a number commenting that this has spurred them on to update and revise their content!
LexisNexis achieved the most successful appearance among all competitors at the conference, and earned recognition from the IBA leadership for its corporate social responsibility and Rule of Law initiatives. The week long event got off to a great start with the IBA President, Fernando Pelaez-Pier and LexisNexis Global Chief Marketing Officer Barbara J. Cooperman presenting the 2009 Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award to Bruno Barata Magalhaes, a young Brazilian lawyer who works in the State of Rio de Janeiro Legislative Assembly. The award was created by the IBA Young Lawyers Committee and LexisNexis to recognize a young lawyer for professional excellence, advancement of legal ethics and service to the community. In addition to being employed full-time in the Legislative Assembly, Magalhaes has established a Brazilian Young Lawyers Bar Association, provides free legal advice via e-mail and was directly responsible for the promulgation of a new law in Rio de Janeiro which established ‘women only cars’ during rush hour. This he championed to stem the instances of sexual harassment of women on the Rio subway.
