MINEOLA, N.Y. — Wal-Mart agreed on May 6 to pay nearly $2 million and improve safety at its 92 New York stores as part of a deal with Nassau County, N.Y., prosecutors that avoids criminal charges in the trampling death of a temporary worker during a holiday shopping melee last year.

Jdimytai Damour, a temporary employee at a Wal-Mart store in Valley Stream, N.Y., was killed in the Nov. 28 incident. At least four others were injured.

The company agreed to employ an improved crowd-management plan for “Black Friday” sales events. Wal-Mart will also set up a $400,000 victims’ compensation and remuneration fund, and give $1.5 million to local social services programs and nonprofit groups.

“This plan is intended to supplement existing safety measures and will enhance the movement of our customers in and out of the store in an even safer and more efficient manner,” Hank Mullany, Senior Vice President and President of Wal-Mart’s Northeast Division said in a press release.
