Supreme Court Rules in Favor of White Firefighters
The Supreme Court ruled, in a 5-4 decision, that white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., were unfairly denied promotions because of their race. The Court's decision today, June 29, reversed a decision that high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor endorsed as an appeals court judge. The Court held the city of New Haven violated white firefighters’ rights by canceling planned promotions because no African-Americans were likely to be made lieutenants or captains based on the results.
