Alaska H.B. 320, Ch. No. 98 – Signed by Governor on 6/19/2008. An Act: Relating to search and rescue training and search and rescue parties; requiring certain search and rescue volunteers to be considered state employees for purposes of workers' compensation coverage; and allowing political subdivisions to elect to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage for search and rescue personnel. Louisiana H.B. 535 - Enrolled and Sent to Governor 6/19/2008. Louisiana H.B. 547 – Enrolled and Sent to Governor 6/19/2008. An Act: To amend and reenact R.S. 23:1310.11, relative to workers' compensation; to provide relative to a time and procedure for the submission of filing fees; to provide for an application for waiver of costs; to require payment of a filing fee to the office of workers' compensation administration within five days of the date of denial of the waiver of costs; and to provide for related matters. New Jersey A.B. 3059 - Introduced 6/19/2008. Statement of Assembly Budget Committee: The bill requires every corporation, limited partnership, limited liability company, limited liability partnership or other employer required by law to submit an annual report, to include valid proof of workers’ compensation coverage, if applicable, as part of the annual report. The bill provides that without the inclusion of the valid proof of coverage, the annual report is not complete for purposes of filing, the requirement to submit the annual report is not fulfilled, and all requirements concerning the failure to submit the annual report shall apply. Rhode Island - Illegal immigration measures died of inaction last Saturday night, 6/21/2008, when the legislature adjourned the session. The package of nine bills and one resolution were all part of a "Campaign for Fairness, Respect and Civil Rights" To read the February 28, 2008 launch of the campaign, click here. The resolution in question opposed implementation of the E-Verify program. On March 27, 2008, Governor Don Carcieri, who claimed that 40,000 illegal immigrants living in Rhode Island contributed to a half billion dollar budget deficit, signed an executive order forcing the state government and companies doing business with the state to use the E-Verify federal database to check the immigration status of new hires, and requiring state police and prison officials to identify illegal immigrant for potential deportation.
