Workers' Comp Fraud Blotter 7/1/2009 - Recent Arrests, Charges & Convictions

Employee or employer fraud – which is the greater problem? Double dippers, false claims, misclassification of workers, and payroll underreporting, are just some of the more common types of fraud we read about in the media and government press releases.

But complex insurance fraud schemes, such as premium fraud, can cost up to hundreds of millions of dollars. Healthcare provider fraud also generates losses in the millions of dollars.

Each week we'll be surveying what the media, state agencies, insurance companies, and others report in terms of workers' comp fraud. Just like a police blotter, our workers' comp fraud blotter lists recent arrests, charges, and convictions.

Troy Man Nabbed for Workers' Comp (NY) – A man was charged with third-degree insurance fraud, a felony, for fraudulently obtaining $6,000 in workers' compensation benefits while still employed. Read more

Austin Man Indicted for Workers' Comp Fraud (TX) – A truck driver was indicted by a grand jury for obtaining $6,197 in workers' comp benefits while he was employed at another job. Read more

Utica Man Arrested for Workers' Comp Fraud (NY) – A carpenter was arrested for collecting $10,200 in workers' comp benefits while working as a carpenter. Read more

Vero Beach Man Receives $101,000 in Restitution From Case Involving Insurance Scam (FL) – The Attorney's Office said $101,036 was paid to a man for restitution following a scam by a now-defunct professional employee organization. Read more

Zion Insurance Agent Pleads Guilty to Bilking 23 Lake County Businesses of Fraudulent Premiums (IL) – The Illinois Dept. of Insurance has unraveled a $400,000 workers' comp scheme. Read more

Vero Beach Attorney Charged With Organized Fraud, Grand Theft, and Workers' Comp Fraud Is Disbarred (FL) – The Florida Supreme Court has disbarred an attorney who used $171,000 of his clients' money for shopping sprees, school tuition and vacation. Read more

Ramona Man to Stand Trial for Murder, Arson, Insurance Fraud (CA) – A businessman accused of murder and arson, is also accused of tax evasion and misclassification of employees to avoid workers' comp insurance requirements, among other things. Read more

Glen Carbon Residents Sentenced on Fraud Convictions (MO) – A woman and her ex-husband were sent to federal prison for falsification of workers' comp claims. Read more

City of Richmond Accuses Police Captain With Workers' Comp Fraud (CA)  – The Richmond Police Dept. says it plans to fire a police captain who claimed workers' comp after he tore a tendon while watching T.V. at his home. Read more
