Workers' Comp Fraud Blotter – July 16, 2009

Santa Paula Man Arrested on Workers' Comp Fraud Charges (CA) – A restaurant worker who collected $30,000 in temporary disability payments has been charged with a felony for allegedly applying for and obtaining another restaurant job during the time he collected benefits, using a falsified name and social security number. Brooklyn Doctor Charged With Defrauding Workers' Comp Insurers (NY) – Federal prosecutors have charged a physician with defrauding workers' comp insurers by seeking payment for procedures never performed, by seeking reimbursement for a suspect number of procedures that would be difficult to perform all in one day, and by seeking money from two different insurers for treating the same patient with the same procedure on the same day. Bainbridge Police Officer and Mother Arrested for Insurance Fraud (GA) – A Bainbridge police officer and his mother, who ran a payroll and insurance service for local businesses, were charged with insurance fraud for taking $22,000 from an Albany business for their own benefit, this after an investigation by the State Board of Workers' Compensation revealed a phony workers' comp certificate for the Albany business. Boardman Restaurant Owner Charged With Workers' Comp Fraud (OH) – The owner of Youngstown Sports Grille has been indicted on a felony charge for failing to secure workers' compensation coverage as well as on a misdemeanor charge related to the state's claim that payments were not made on several workers' comp claims. Bainbridge Public Safety Investigator Arrested for Insurance Fraud (OH) – A public safety investigator was charged with insurance fraud, violation of oath by public officer and filing by employer of evidence of compliance with insurance requirements. Read more

Deputy Sheriff Allegedly Bowled While Claiming Injury (LA) – A Lafourche sheriff’s deputy has been charged with theft, malfeasance in office and insurance fraud, after a multi-agency investigation alleged she frequently bowled while collecting checks for a work-related injury. Read more

Salinas Businessman Sentenced to Five Years of Felony Probation (CA) – The owner of Shorty’s Portable Toilets has been sentenced to five years of felony probation and faces penalties for tax evasion and failure to secure workers compensation insurance for his employees. Read more

Workers' Comp Agency to Investigate Police Officer's Disability (OH) – A police officer, who was cited for allegedly riding his motorcycle 150 mph and who has been on disability since December, is now being investigated by the Bureau of Workers' Compensation to determine if he exaggerated his injuries. Scrap Yard Worker Charged With Comp Fraud (NY) – A man who received $6,318 in workers' comp benefits because he said he was too hurt to work, was found working in a scrap yard and now faces felony charges. Read more

Nurse Arrested for Cheating on Home Visits to Claimant (NY) – A nurse has been charged with a felony for cheating a claimant out of home visits and then falsifying his nursing treatment forms that were submitted to NYSIF for payment. Read more
