Workers' Comp Fraud Blotter 8/6/2009 - Recent Arrests, Charges & Convictions

Each week we'll be surveying what the media, state agencies, insurance companies, and others report in terms of workers' comp fraud. Just like a police blotter, our workers' comp fraud blotter lists recent arrests, charges, and convictions.

 

Workers' Comp Fraud Blotter – August 6, 2009

Milpitas Man Arrested for Alleged Workers' Comp Fraud (CA) – A Milpitas man was charged with presenting a false or fraudulent insurance claim and making false or fraudulent statements to his employer and to his treating physicians. Read more

Two Former Blue Cross Blue Shield Workers Sentenced for Fraud (SC) – Two former employees of Blue Cross Blue Shield were sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the two former employees changed federal tax ID numbers of health care providers to individuals who were not health care providers. These individuals would then receive workers' comp checks in the mail and cash the checks using bogus bank accounts. Read more

Las Vegas Man Sentenced for Workers' Comp Fraud (NV) – A Las Vegas resident has been sentenced for workers' comp fraud, in a claim worth $241,667, with an additional $286,974 for future payments. The man claimed he was wheelchair bound, could only walk short distances, and could not drive or lift objects, yet surveillance video and testimony of neighbors confirmed otherwise. Read more

Saugerties Man Sentenced for Workers' Comp Fraud (NY) – A Saugerties man was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years of probation for illegally accepting workers' comp benefits over a three-year span. The man was caught on tape moving furniture and riding a motorcycle without the cane he used during medical exams. Read more

Former Weyerhauser Employee Sentenced for Workers' Comp Fraud (OK) – A former Weyerhauser employee plead guilty to making false statements to collect workers' comp benefits for cumulative injuries to his hands, arms, shoulders, lungs, and hearing. According to the Attorney General, the employee falsified information regarding the limits of the physical tasks he performs in his new job, and he indicated on his application for the new job that he did not have any physical limitations. Owner of Hanover Cleaning Company Arraigned for Violating State Wage and Hour and Workers' Comp Laws (MA) – The owner of a Hanover cleaning company was arraigned in connection with violating the state's larceny, wage and hour, and workers' compensation insurance coverage laws. Read more

Pennsylvania Businessman Convicted of Money Laundering and Fraud (PA) – A businessman, who was recently convicted of taking $650,000 from a county workers' compensation fund, has been taken into custody. Authorities are seeking to revoke his bail. Read more

Oneida County Heavy Equipment Operator Accused of Fraud (NY) – An Oneida County man accused of fraudulently collecting $26,000 in workers’ comp benefits while working as a heavy equipment operator was arrested last Thursday. Read more
