As a young girl born of an impoverished Cambodian family, Somaly Mam was sold into sexual slavery and was forced to work in a brothel. As an adult she has become a world-renowned activist dedicated to helping children and women who have become victims of human trafficking. She has been the recipient of several awards and was honored by CNN as a CNN Hero and by Glamour Magazine as the 2006 Woman of the Year for her fight against sexual slavery and human trafficking. The Somaly Mam Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity that working to end slavery.
