The Polaris Project is named after the North Star, which was used to guide slaves in the United States towards freedom in the abolitionist northern states through the Underground Railroad. The Polaris Project, founded in 2002, works to combat human trafficking and modern-day slavery, both in the United States and internationally. The Project provides local and national crisis hotlines, direct outreach, victim identification, social services and housing to victims, advocacy for anti-trafficking legislation, and engages community members in local an national grassroots efforts.
