Withers today announced that it has appointed Simon Michaels as a partner in Withers’ Singapore office. Mr Michaels is the third partner to join the Singapore team since the office opened in May 2012 and will take up his role in Withers’ Wealth Planning practice from January 2013. Simon will focus on tax and wealth planning, advising Singapore’s growing number of ultra high net worth families and trust companies.
A dual-qualified English barrister and solicitor, Simon has been listed as a leading individual in renowned legal ranking publications, including Legal 500 2011 and Chambers Asia 2012. Since moving to Asia in 2009, Simon has advised a number of Asia’s wealthiest and most prominent families. He has implemented trust and other wealth structuring solutions for several US multi-billion net worth clients and has acted in contentious international trust matters. Simon was most recently partner and Head of the South East Asian private client practice at Berwin Leighton Paisner.
Jay Krause, Withers’ Head of Wealth Planning Asia comments: "We are hugely encouraged by how quickly we are expanding in Asia and are thrilled to be welcoming Simon to the growing Withers team. Singapore is one of the world centres for private wealth management and someone of Simon’s calibre will accelerate our growth, enhancing our ability to provide quality advice to ultra high net worth individuals and their businesses in South East Asia.”
Today’s announcement follows a year of expansion in Asia for Withers. As part of its growth strategy for the region, in 2012, Withers opened its Singapore office; launched its first regulatory practice in the region, with the appointment of partner Gez Owen, Head of International Regulatory and Corporate Crime; promoted Rita Ku to become Withers’ first Chinese partner; promoted Sharon Ser to Senior Regional Partner and relocated partner Erik Wallace from London to Hong Kong to support its US tax and wealth planning team. Withers has hired four partners across the Hong Kong and Singapore offices in the last six months.
