Making Your Transition to Practice Smoother

At the National Association of Women Lawyers Backpack to Briefcase program held at Loyola University School of Law in Chicago, a panel of distinguished women legal professionals was asked what one thing could make the transition to practice smoother. Following is a synopsis of their comments:

Betsy Zukley: Learn to take criticism. If someone has taken the time to give you constructive criticism, take it in the spirit that it was given. The person is trying to help you with your career.

Kim Klein: Everyone makes mistakes. If you do, acknowledge it. Bring it to the partner’s attention. Don’t try to hide it. If you make full disclosure early enough, the partner may be able to rectify the mistake.

Dorothy Capers: Make no unnecessary enemies. Don’t call someone on the carpet if it is not necessary. Pick your battles because the person you criticize may be your boss some day.

Carolyn Clift: Relationships, relationships, relationships. You are responsible for your own personal development. Find a mentor for feedback, and manage your relationships with your peers, subordinates, and superiors.

Josie Gough: We are more than lawyers. Don’t lose the fact that you are a daughter, mother, sister, or friend.
