Getting and Keeping Your First Law Job

The most basic skills everyone needs to know when searching for, interviewing for and holding a job in the legal profession.                                    

The Lexis Hub for New Attorneys exists to provide you with career tips and information to ease your transition from legal education to the practice of law.  Some of the most basic bits of advice have appeared on this site over the years, and are worth featuring for that time when you need to sit down to write a resume or cover letter or prepare for the interview. Or, once you get the job, we'll provide tips to help you stand out above the other associates in your new firm. We've added some new advice and brought back some useful job-getting guidance from the past.

You will note a new section on the right column called "Featured Career Tips."  This section lists these important how-to's in an easy-to-find view.  We'll start with:

The Hub would like to help bring you the information you need.  Tell us any other career basics we can include that will make your job hunt and new job preparation go more smoothly.  Please post a comment below with a subject you'd like to see and we will do our very best to add a related blog addressing that career-related topic.

Are there certain specialties or areas I should focus on during the tight economy? As a 3L, I want to be as prepared as possible for what''s ahead so I can get--and keep a position.

    There are definitely certain areas that are thriving in the down economy. Consider these:
    -Bankruptcy
    -Alternative Dispute Resolution
    -Prepaid Legal Services
    -Environmental and Energy Law
    -Consumer Protection
    -Debt Collection
    -Elder Law
    -Labor Law
