LexisHub Survey Indicates New Lawyers Broaden Job Searches to Find Positions

Flexibility and Changing Expectations are Key in Tight Economy

Amid reports that the economic downturn has cut the number of available openings at big firms for this year’s class, a survey by the LexisNexis HUB for New Attorneys notes that recent graduates did some shifting in order to land their first jobs.

The New York Times reports that there are only half as many available positions to compete for this year compared to last year, referring to the upcoming job hunting months as, “the most wrenching job search season in over 50 years.” The newspaper cites several firms that have postponed or cancelled interviews altogether, and reports that interviews at top law schools are down by a third to one half. While the economy is showing signs of improvement, some firms are cautiously waiting a few months to begin the interview process, hoping for more positive signs. The current LexisHub poll asks readers, “Did the current economic climate force you to change your expectations about the first job you got (or will get) right out of Law School?” The overwhelming majority of respondents indicated that the economic climate has or will affect their job choice. Results as of September 9th indicated that 67% of the recently hired either shifted focus or accepted an offer that was less than the job they had hoped for upon graduation. Only 33% reported that they had secured the type of position they wanted. We will keep you updated as additional responses are posted.
