Types of Firms Practicing Personal Injury Law

PI is a broad and popular practice area, covering many different types of injury to the person. It remains one of the most heavily practiced areas of civil litigation in any state as well as one of the most financially rewarding. PI practitioners may specialize in PI or a subcategory of PI (such as products liability)—this often occurs at highly successful smaller PI firms or PI departments of larger firms. PI may also be just one area practiced by a small law or solo practitioner, along with family, criminal, and transactional and whatever else comes in the door.
  • Small Law Perspective: PI law is practiced primarily within the 1-20 attorneys market segment.
  • Large Law and National Law Perspective: Certain segments of PI practice are very financially rewarding: wrongful death, medical malpractice, complex product liability, toxic torts, antitrust, mass disasters, and class actions. These “high value” cases tend to be large and complex, both in terms of the number of parties involves and the procedural mechanisms required to litigate them. These cases attract large law and national firms, which have the personnel, expertise, and financial resources required.
  • Corporate and Government Perspective: Companies and various government agencies may also be impacted by the practice of PI law.
