LexisNexis Pro Bono Program Targets at-risk Youth

LexisNexis was recognized by the American Bar Association (ABA) for the company's pro bono efforts to help make a difference for the youth of America, during the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago held July 30 through August 4. LexisNexis has worked with the ABA Commission on Youth at Risk over the last two years and at the meeting presented the Commission with a service guide for lawyers, “Making a Connection and a Difference with America’s Youth.”
Established in 2006, the ABA Commission on Youth at Risk brings together lawyers, judges, representatives of youth advocacy organizations, distinguished academics, corporate and community leaders, and representatives of several of the nation’s most youth-dedicated philanthropic organizations to identify challenges facing this population that greatly elevate their "risk.” They also work to enhance laws, judicial intervention strategies, policies, practices, and programs intended to help prevent teens from becoming delinquent or engaging in criminal acts.
Pro Bono Task Force member and liaison to the ABA Commission, Nigel Roberts, volunteered to work on the project when the opportunity was presented by his fellow liaison from the Legal Marketing Association (LMA). “We wanted to bring together, in one place, a handbook that would provide resources for lawyers and law firms,” says Roberts, Director of Global Associations with LexisNexis. The publication highlights pro bono, public service and community service programs that describe ways for attorneys to devote time and expertise to helping youth avoid delinquent acts and to encourage their participation and support.

Roberts and his fellow liaison worked on the initial draft of the handbook and ABA staff and Commission volunteer members reviewed the content, added their own input and provided recommendations on additional pro bono, public service and community service programs. Thanks to the fantastic help of Linda Sowers and her team in Marketing Communications, LexisNexis provided outstanding creative design and printing. “The goal was to include programs for youth aged 13 to 21 run by bar associations or programs with significant bar involvement to make it easy for lawyers and law firms to get involved,” says Roberts. “This was a wonderful collaborative effort with the ABA Commission on Youth at Risk, the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service, the LMA and LexisNexis.”
The handbook will be made available for download free of charge on the associations’ and LexisNexis websites, in addition to the 5,000 hard copies that will be distributed to lawyers and law firms across the country. Roberts and Barbara Cooperman, Global CMO LexisNexis Group, attended the Commission meeting in Chicago with guests including Judge Judith S. Kaye, former Chief Judge of the State of New York.
