One Search Sizzles! Build a Case Digest or Cover an Issue—Fast
Posted by LexisHub Staff
One search can be powerful.

At lexis.com®, one search can cover multiple jurisdictions and multiple content types.

LexisNexis Search by Topic or Headnote compiles a thorough overview on your legal topic, pinpoints relevant case annotations—or builds a case digest, including the latest U.S. and state decisions.

And—here’s the best part—you don’t need to select search words or commands. Just select one of 6,000+ topics or subtopics, including today’s emerging legal topics.

Search by Topic and Headnote Both Begin with the Same Two Steps:
1. Start at the lexis.com Search tab. Select the by Topic or Headnote subtab.

2. Choose a topic. Your last 20 topics are saved automatically. To return to a saved topic, just select it from the drop-down menu. You can also select a new topic two ways:
A. Find a Legal Topic (Option 1); just enter with several key words, e.g.,
ENTER: mortgage foreclosure

B. Explore Legal Topics (Option 2) by drilling down through one of 40+ practice areas to find the precise topic you need. Select an area, e.g., Real Estate, and use the + to expand any topic area.
Now you’re ready to choose your path—Search by Topic or Search by Headnote. The search box options for both are displayed.

To Search by Topic, Select the Option 1 – Search across Sources search box and select your jurisdictions and sources—up to 50 relevant courts, statutes & regulations, treatises, agency materials, etc.

To Search by Headnote, Select the Option 2 – Search by Headnote search box and choose your jurisdiction, e.g., federal, state or a combination.

Got Results? Here’s How You Manage Them

Search by Topic results are presented in a tabbed, table format. You can easily zero in on any resource or resource categoryof interest. As you move among full-text documents, the tabs remain at the top of your screen so you never lose your place.

Search by Headnote results give you multiple viewing options—on one screen. For example, see which cases are most cited by courts. (Go to the Sort By drop-down box and select Frequently Cited.) View only cases with headnotes. (Click the Show Headnotes Only link.) Or View In-Depth Discussions.Get up to 15 best cases, based on natural language. (Click the In-Depth Discussions link.)

LexisNexis® Search by Topic:
Cover Your Bases

Select your topic and cover multiple jurisdictions and sources simultaneously, zeroing in on applicable:
  • primary law, including cases, codes, regulatory and administrative materials—even law review articles.
  • Matthew Bender® treatise treatise analyses.
  • practice aids, such as checklists, forms and drafting tips.
  • LexisNexis Briefs, Pleadings & Motions.
  • Mealey’s™ Litigation Reports and other relevant legal news sources.
Treatises are pre-screened. That means if the source is listed for selection, you know your topic is discussed. No irrelevant hits. (And you may uncover analysis in places you may never have thought to look.)

LexisNexis® Search by Headnote:
Build a Case Digest on the Fly!

It’s fast—and effective. Select a topic, then, in one step LexisNexis Search by Headnote generates a summary list of relevant and current cases on any legal issue, even emerging legal issues.

Plus Search by Headnote adds in-depth case discussions on your topic. You cover more bases than searching for headnotes alone.  And because this feature works with constantly updated case databases, your results include the most current rulings.
